Great list. I came to it by searching Substack for Leon Michels intel, because I also loved that Clairo album this year. Wonder what you thought of the—stick with me here—Norah Jones album that Leon also produced?
wow, THANK YOU for suggesting this. I've been listening all morning and I'm REALLY loving it! I haven't really listened to any of her work in depth but I'm sooo into this.
I _didn’t_ listen to a lot of new music this year, but Magdalena Bay was an exception and what an exception. Death & Romance was my song of the year; those opening piano chords are perfect. Even better, it was one of the rare times that my 11 year old liked a song I played so much she listened to it on her own!
Latecomer for runner up for song of the year is Literary Mind by SPRINTS - also recommended here on Music Substack - largely thanks to the moment at 3:30 that had me laughing on a dog walk it was so fun.

I actually haven’t listened but I’ll put it on my list and report back 🫡

Oh I’m so glad. It’s my first Norah deep-dive too. Always respected her as a musician but until now didn’t know her music was my thing.
A gorgeous list full of many new to me recs! Thanks for sharing <3

SPRINTS is great! found them through work + caught their show when they came to Nashville last year. I love “Feast”
taste 🤍
Some good ones here. Will check out the Clairo. Thanks!
